Newsletter 11: "Work from Hotel" is Here to Stay... are you Ready?

Lara Spence

Google had over 10 billion hits on “working from home” and webcams were sold out everywhere. In March 2020, the workforce went into a worldwide, trial by fire, experiment of working from home. The results were fascinating.

In a recent study by Habanero 79% of the workforce had never worked from home and a whopping 69% said they would continue working from home with some level of frequency. Clearly, it has been a journey that has opened up new possibilities.

Learning on the fly, parents with unmet childcare needs, passed their children off like a baton in a road race. Others found solace from the calamity of a crowded home office to the quiet of a local hotel room. Alas, “Work from Hotel” was born.

The appeal of a sanctuary stocked with a new view, freshly made bed, WIFI and a private workspace is not a hard sell!

Hoteliers who have embraced the concept are seeing a positive response. Most notably from business travelers who frankly, miss travel. As well, working parents are booking themselves in for multiple days at a time to complete projects.

The research indicates that this novel concept will continue into the next normal. Why? Because the pandemic has broken the myth that work only happens in the office. This has blown the door wide open for hotels to seize this opportunity. They can finally jump into the opportunity that We Work and Starbucks have known all along. “Alone together” is better.

Here are 10 tips for a successful launch of a Work from Hotel program:

  1. Stress safety and cleaning protocols. The only thing holding customers back is still the risk of the corona virus. Promote cleaning standards, particular in the rooms. Have plenty of PPE and hand sanitizers available from door to door.

  2. Create a compelling workspace. Focus on rooms which accommodate both a desk and a seating area. a) Stand out with a standup desk which are so popular since the pandemic they are perpetually backordered. b) Create a collection of socially distanced seating for up to three people.

  3. Include basic business tools such as WIFI, good lighting over the workspace and power outlets.

  4. Offer cool AV upgrades including additional screens, microphones, lighting and cameras for virtual and hybrid meeting.

  5. Include luxurious spa amenities for midday pampering and / or babysitting services for working parents.

  6. Offer room service, delivered and enjoyed in the safety and ambiance of a fresh space.

  7. Satisfy guest cravings with delicious grab and go snacks in your Lobby Shop or In Room Retail program.

  8. Offer discounts on fitness facilities, restaurants, spa,or other available hotel services.

  9. Offer a Business Pass for multiple room nights to inspire a recurring WFHotel Day.

  10. Offer a WFHotel stayover so that family members can join in after a successful workday. It’s like the reverse of a late checkout!

The future of work is becoming more certain. It has quickly evolved to a culture of “work from anywhere.” This is the perfect time to adjust your inventory and test if there is a market in your community.

Introducing We Roast Nuts! Our newest partner is no stranger to the nut industry. We Roast Nuts has a long and rich history of three generations of nut making. It is truly a Canadian success story!

It all started as a family business in a small shop in Mardin, Turkey in 1889. The family took pride in providing freshly roasted nuts to the locals, a staple in the region's food culture. Led by founder, Mr. Ahmsih Basse, the family began by roasting chickpeas, almonds, pistachios and small melon seeds. Their craftsmanship set new benchmarks for quality and taste within the region.

After 30 years, Mr. Basse passes the reigns to his son Farid. Farid grew up learning by observing firsthand as an apprentice to his father’s mastery in high quality nut production.

In 1989 Farid moved his family to Montreal Canada, where they continued their passion for nut manufacturing by founding Basse Nuts. As new immigrants to Canada, Farid and family had to learn the entire business again from the ground up. Their determination paid off, and they successfully expanded the business to four prosperous locations.

Enter the third generation, Pierre Basse, with a shared love of the nut business, and a new vision. In order to meet the rapidly growing demand of online shopping, accelerated even more by the pandemic, Pierre started WeRoastNuts.com.

WeRoastNuts.com, is offering a convenient way to explore and experience over 100 products, delivered to your doorstep. We guarantee every order is freshly made and packaged to ensure we continue to provide the highest quality and service established over the last century.” says Basse.
