Newsletter 6: PPE Becomes a Leading Business Strategy

Health, safety and PPE are no longer afterthoughts in your business strategy. Nor is PPE limited to health care workers and the hotel back of house team. To put it boldly, PPE has become a leading business strategy for the recovery and survival of the entire economic ecosystem.

In a survey on Canadian businesses returning to work, Statistics Canada revealed that 79% will provide employees with face masks and other protective equipment and a whopping 87% said they would increase sanitization in the workplace.

Now that social distancing measures are relaxing, Health Care and Accommodation & Food service ranked a very close first and second respectively for industries in need of Personal Protective Equipment.

When it comes to equipment, face masks, cleaners and gloves are the top three needs

What does all this mean for the hotel industry? It's somewhat straightforward to mandate employees, to wear masks at work, but what does this mean for guests?

Can hotels move beyond the socially charged debate: “to wear or not to wear a mask” and mandate all guests to wear a mask? Marriott says yes, we can. Following American Hotel & Lodging Association (AHLA)’s “Safe Stay Guest Checklist” announcement last week, Marriott International will require all guests to wear a face covering in its hotels effective July 27.

Whether mandated or strongly recommended, stringent health and safety protocols for every person within your hotel saves lives. When you can get your entire team to buy into the execution of PPE, it serves as an authentic symbol for rebuilding trust and attracting guests back to your hotel. In other words, a solid PPE strategy becomes an important first stepping stone forward.
