Newsletter 9: Spark Delight in the Guest Experience

Impulse shopping adds a little spark of delight into a routine stroll through your hotel lobby. Like the first cup of coffee in the morning, our brain can make an instant connection between seeing a tempting and delicious treat and the satisfaction of having it. Once we consume a delightful indulgence, if it exceeds our expectations, we’ll want to do it again. For example, if a guest discovers a healthy, delicious smoothie in your lobby shop the first day, it is very likely you will see him back the next day! By the third day your barista is putting the cold, frothy beverage out on the counter in advance. They share a warm, grateful exchange about how well 'you know me!' Your guest is taking that moment with him as a reflection of his guest experience. Taking it one step further, guests who are really wowed by a new discovery will look to extend the experience. They might look for the product online, or stock up on supply to take home to their family. An example of this is Daniel Chocolates, the preferred chocolatier for many hotels in Vancouver. He reports a direct correlation between increased traffic at his retail locations to delighted hotel guests that have experienced his chocolate. On the flip side, more and more guests are creatures of good habits. They bring those habits on the road with them. Recently Good Drink earned status as the best-selling iced tea in Whole Foods. Yet this incredible tasting, top selling, “good for you”, craft beverages is only available in a few Canadian hotel properties. Consumers are looking to find niche, locally made brands. They are a little let down when they find the same familiar yet uninspired collection of mainstream foods and beverages. When they are not inspired, the impulse comes and goes without being acted upon. No impulse, no joy, no positive connection to your brand. Creating an impulse shopping experience that surprises, delights and sparks joy for guests is an important strategy worth exploring. Keep it subtle and simply add to your current assortment or jump in and redesign your grab and go offering. At Concierge Connection we can consult on the best option for you.
